WEEK # 3 - WRITE UP SENT We'll, we took it easy getting up this morning - stayed in the sack to around 7:00 and than got to see Alex, turns out he got in around midnight - good trip , just a long day. We gave Linda the day off roading and decided to run from camp - took a brace out through the flats then the big meadow in the south and ended at triple gates, Linda met us and we took another brace back. We had Alexandra with us and we were off!! - sidenote is that I just refilled our quail yesterday and we'll see how they handle it. Flats: Dolly & Dalva - very interesting brace w/Delva showing a little more hunt but not willing to attack the cover. Dolly just floating to the front and I believe pointing her past finds although I did see a bird fly that Delva chased - Dolly I let release herself and she hunted the open field and pointed w/extreme style - let Delva come through and Dolly dove at the bird which flushed, I yelled and hit her with the collar( I thought) and she stopped and was corrected. Sent on , she rolled and didn't want to go with me - tried getting to Sidell's place out west & I popped her again and Alex questioned if I had the button in - checked it out and didn't have it in- rode hard and fast to get to her and called her in which she did - plugged her in and we were off again. Hunted through the gate and went south and Dolly just stretched, went to go back on me once, a pop ( it worked this time ) & I had her attention - she just handled perfect w/very good drive and carriage - pretty to watch. Dalva was a little overdone toward the end - had some tweety bird chase and a quail chase but not really full into it. 32 min. no wild birds. Kelsey & Bo - Lee said he tried to sell Geddeis Bo last fall, he should've done it - just a nice way of going, very birdy and carries himself great, chased some dicky birds - all and all a good job -- Kelsey was fast and wide early making some real good moves and at about 7 winded birds, pointed - moved up and out went 3 sharp- tails, she stood but new she crowded them, I put her back and told her so. After that she still had good moves but several stops to dinks and almost false points, not trusting herself but still show- ing forward movement and good speed. Hunted the flats and lost her in real tall grass and found standing, very well located covey w/ perfect manners and good style - sent on, she had a little more pop in her step and finished hunting strongly. 28 min. - 3 chickens JJ & Mac - JJ has the carriage, some good moves, a little hunt and chase of dinks & other trash, partial chase on a sharptail(just spotted in air) but nothing to write home about. Mac a nice solid pattern, tail up as she hunted the objectives a little flat going from place to place. Very good point at 1st feeder w/JJ knocking a quail and her having v/stylish find w/good manners. She showed nice bottom and still going with us and hunting all the way to the end. 32 min. - 1 chicken Glory & Flash II - Glory showed me some real leg today, just rolling around the flats, very wide and mainly front -got after her for a NP that she left on after I whoa'd her- she wasn't too happy about that but she listened then. Flash a better pattern w/ less loops than in the past and a pretty good pattern. She hunted and listened fairly well, with some help from Alex. Glory had a very poor STbump at 2nd caller and tried to leave, I corrected and put her in the harness. Not banner bird work for Glory, Flash had sight of one and appeared to handle it ok w/style. Finish at a moderate pace. Kind of a lazy Sunday afternoon, just took it pretty easy the whole day. Lee took some pups for work in the horse pen where all the chukker hung out. Flats: all the pups ran w/Buck. Hud worked around still w/low tail - had covey of chukkar and chased w/vigor. Zooka - ran around but has plenty still to learn -no birds. Star - just seems like a lost soul - need to spend more time w/her. Birdwork: Dusty - the key her is patience and we're just throwing pigeons, he's standing as we lay the bird down and then kick it out and fire a shot. Actually had Devin walk behind him before we flushed the bird. He's taking to this very well. August 23, 1999 - Monday - clear, cool and promise of cooler weather for a day or two. We're hard at it. Trying to get out early but this trains out of the station a little slow. Roading: Patti-Clancey W.-Dolly-Clancy N- Rita-Kelsey--60 min. Mojo-Lina-Roxie-Bill -- 40 min. - old Bill saw a quail and tried to leap at him except the atv was in his way and his was hooked front and back so he ends up stuck under the atv, choking with Linda having to fight to get him unhooked than lift the machine off him - in the meantime he's howling in a apparent pain. It takes some time but she manages to get it off him and he jumps up and starts to lick lina - needless to say Linda was relieved he wasn't hurt but she did have a few words for him. Hills: Jill & Clint - started these 2 off S in Richardson's and they got going quick - no shortage of style for these two. A covey of chickens flushed early w/Jill giving chase to one she saw - she was caught and corrected. Clint saw them and he was stopped - not easily but stopped. He then went on and had a turtle find and I popped him with the collar - he than figured he should point them and we went round on a couple - sure changed his course - Jill ran a rather consistant front running SD course - nice job but no bird finds. Working Clint back to camp we had seen a covey leave and got him into the area and and ended with a nice find on a pair. 36 min. - 15 chickens. Cali & Lightning - these two can cover the ground w/Lightning really hitting the front while Cali was standing tall on a turtle. Sent on Cali got into the cactus and had a rough brace - Lightning turned to the w & was looking good - but got into a head wind and cactus and this shut both down for 7 or 8 min. Cali hooked a jack rabbit trail and when she saw it hit high gear, fortunately she was plugged in and got her to stop as Lightning came into the area and back with style. Turned back toward the truck, Cali finished tentatively while Lightning was back hitting it and not wanting to quit. Pal & Sunny - ran these around the corn field looking for pheasants, Sunny very moderate GD with a couple of moves but not getting with the program yet - Pal kinda took the edge and disappeared showed up half way around the circle and was with us for awhile but left us and looped the corn again - no birds 27 min. That was the morning and got back to camp and Roger and Gerald had rounded up a bunch of bulls and brought them to camp. Did some chores but the winds started to blow and got pretty strong in the afternoon. Went to take a nap and & Linda let me know that our good buddy Roger Pumphrey had stopped to visit - oh well, we talked and he stayed a couple hours giving us a couple of aerial shots of the place. - neat to see the pictures. Lightning had got out of the box and came to finish with us. Lee took his dad to the airport in Norfolk - he sure had a good time in camp and said he'd come to Booneville and see the crew. Birdwork: Dusty - he really styled up as we put birds to sleep for him to see and fired the .410 blanks for him - standing tall and watching them go plus a little obedience w/spike collar - real nice progress. Mac - a stylish point but a flagrant break on the flush - took quite an effort to stop her and make her stand - she was not a happy camper. Lightning - worked a real nice stylish point and great manners - sharp and quick. Dolly - she was out of the box, unplugged and worked on a single kinda got on the wrong side of the wind and pointed the situation- let her move and she worked around and pointed w/good style & manners. Glory - worked out and pointed a long way away - with average style and good manners. Back to camp and a great night to sit out and enjoy a great dinner that Denise fixed - chicken and pasta. Very cool weather this evening - needed jackets. August 24, 1999 - Tuesday -cool, crisp w/coyotes almost in camp at 5am - but we got up and ready for the day. A birthday in camp - no big deal but some great gifts from Linda - good Fleetwood Mad CD 's, shirts, cashews - what more can a guy ask for and a women that takes total charge of our roading program - the dogs can't wait to see her in the morning - treats and a cruise through the meadows - that makes them happy campers. Roading: Clancey W.- Lightning - Clint--61 min. Jill-Cali-Pal - - 33 min. Hills: Patti & Clancy N. - these 2 are in their prime and our goal is to get them ready for their big years - roading is getting them real fit - cut them loose and both started strong w/good flowing pattern and front moving but Patti v/wide and got off on to her own thing - Clancy a real nice first 20 then started to warm up - still hunting but not as big although forward - Patti had really gotten into it and was rolling for the middle section - about as wide as you would want a SD to be and front but not huge - Clancy pointed at 12 w/ great style - Patti about 60 yds a way also pointed in same area but neither backing as far as we could tell - real good area for birds - but none found nor turtles either - sent on Clancy got around back good but started to shorten w/birds leaving the area and her standing w/very little style - went to her a single chicken still was there but 25' behind - good manners and sent on - not really going hard anymore - sunny & warming quickly - Patti out of pocket awhile - moderate finish for both dogs w/the edge to Patti on course but still a decent job for Clancy. 43 min. - 3 chickens Flash II & Roxie - well this was a good time down for both - consid- erable improvement in pattern for Flash and the best style on the ground for Roxie - tail up and cracking -- good race - patterning front and a stylish point at 8 min. - 10:30 tail and v/solid - went to her as a chicken got up followed by 15 more - perfect manners and steady for shot - no problem - race had up and down moments w/the end not too pretty in the cactus but she didn't quit - Flash worked up hillside at 27 and pointed stylishly as Alex got to her a nice covey flushed and she had great style and manners - sent on she went over a hill, pointed - 2 birds flushed and she broke and chased big time - had to be corrected and not much happened after that. Pick up time came for Roxie and she flat left me - tried to be PATIENT but she just flat wasn' t going to come back and started chasing trash birds - chased her down on the horse - 1/2 mile away - she is very aware how ticked off I was - we'll see if it does any good. 33 min. - 45+ birds - chickens and sharptails Flats: Dalva & JJ - got these two down - JJ plenty of style - both hunted good early and pointed and chased big covey in 1st line - heat caught up w/them and some hunt all the way but lacked real punch. Star & Bo - Bo the young dog star of camp - just gets right with the program -hunts and carries himself well and fun to watch - Star has a few more front moves - slow steady progress but not as much hunt as I would like to see at this time. The rest of the day just work stuff and warm sunny weather. Nice peaceful day - busy in the office. Birdwork: Flash II - well this proved interesting - set up a couple for her to point and she came in and jammed it w/moderate style & perfect manners - alex sent her on to make sure she didn't delay chase- I was sitting on the ground taking a picture of her - she hooked my direction and alex popped her & she just charged straight into me- we went rolling on the ground after she t-boned me- quite a site I would imagine. Dolly - sent her out and she winded a long way off - worked around and pointed w/very good style - perfect manners. Sent on- took her to where another bird had run out and she hunted the area for several minutes and established nicely. V/good manners w/style- nice piece of work on the running bird. Glory - worked out to the fenceline and she than pointed nicely - still a level tail but styled up and good manners on this one. Good nose and wants to do it right. Dusty - worked as before but undid the half hitch - a little more movement today but still a real good session. Called it a day and came back for a real good birthday dinner and some fine wine. Beautiful cool clear night with the stars and a very bright almost full moon. August 25, 1999 - Wednesday morning cool & clear 57 degrees and we're off. Decided to start off early with a brace on the flats see how our quail are doing. Flats: Lightning & Cali - no shortage of speed here w/lightning showing the more consistent pattern although they were both hitting a pretty good lick-moving out to the hay meadow south - hunting the right hand edge and the two got almost to Richardson's and decided to hook each other w/Cali leading the way taken the woodsedge to oblivion and seen taken the far edge - over 1/2 mile away back- wards - they came back after 5 or 6 minutes and handled the rest of the way w/Lightning doing a real nice job of front and pattern- ing and hooking edges when she got to them. Crossed back into the flats and saw Lightning well down the line on point - went to her stylish find and had a well done single chukker - all in order- sent on both hunted the objectives and finished with pop in there step. Lightning ends up dog of the day. Roading: Patti-Rita-Glory-Jill -- 62 min. Mojo-Lina-Roxie -- 44 min. Hills: Dolly & Mac - both these dogs plugged in and we cast them off into a still wind - both moved well and hunted w/Dolly the more range but still handling - got kinda wide one time but came in on her own - tapped her twice for hooking trash and she settled in after that - Mac having some nice moves but a little sore footed at times - 1 chicken seen, non for the dogs and a good hunting finish for Dolly handling with make still giving an effort but her pop was gone. Kelsey & Bill - Bill's opening move had him pointing on a knoll and moving on - just kind of went through the motions into the wind- Kelsey a few good moves but nothing to brag about - about half way I really got after her case - stopping her and having a little heart to heart - from then on she showed much more forward motion - Bill pointed again on top of a hill into a gale - told him to go on but he stayed as a single chicken went - good style and manners - sent on he was a little better for awhile but never really got untracked-getting warm now. 27 min - 4 chickens. Flats: Sunny & Bo - Bo rather fast and popping the edges - kinda pushed Sunny around but not really getting much hunt - Bo has the potential to run -- Clint & Dalva - great style and carriage early for Clint - pulled Dalva into the cover which she really needed - they were doing some hunting and it's really starting to warm up - after the pond they went to the single tree w/Clint stopping - bird left and Clint chased - put the hook on him as Dalva got another bird - roaded the Clint man into camp and let Dalva hunt - he knew he was wrong. Time to break for lunch and load up the truck to see if we can do some painting up at Geralds. We got going on the wind break fencing at Geralds and were really clipping along when the pump puffed blue smoke and wouldn't restart. We worked for quite a time ( already had put on 35 gallons) and really frustrated when we couldn't get it to run. The clouds starting rolling in and about the time Alex cleaned the plug and got it going, we decided to call it a day but we had gotten close. Back to camp for dinner and a early night to bed. August 26, 1999 - Thursday -nice and clear but a promise of some real heat. We want to get our painting at Geralds done today - hope the weather holds. Roading: Clancey W. - Dolly-Clancy N.-Lightning - Clint-- 60 min. Mac-Bil-Pal-- 48 min. Flats: Rita & FlashII - off to the front w/Rita letting me know that she wasn't real excited to be on the flats - kinda bouncing around w/ Flash showing real improvement on the ground - nice solid race- Rita a couple of big moves in the hay meadow and a NP with a command back for Flash- not pretty- onward Rita started to leave for the hills and barely stayed with us - she said if you want me come and get me. 32 min - no birds Riley & Sunny - some real improvement here w/Riley looking pretty good hunting the objectives and Sunny taking an edge and carrying it, hunting by the 1st feeder - tried to really get her in birds - back on course , she reached big hunting ahead and eventually hooking the front, we worked both dogs around the 2nd feeder but no birds could be produced. Decent race for both dogs- 24 min. JJ & Star - both hunted around to 1st feeder and than JJ knocked a bird and so did Star, than JJ pointed solidly and they knocked some more birds and they just had a ball - good for the pups, we hooked the field and headed back - good experience. Birdwork: - Delton from Uncle Buck's came to camp and visited for awhile - came out while we did birdwork. Hud - worked around and he got right on top of bird - got it to fly and he chased - turned him on - not a real good point. Clint - worked him on a single and he pointed nicely - flushed and got a good retrieve - fun for this young boy - he needed that. Dalva - worked into one and had a short point - got the flush a kill and she picked up and carried around getting her back to Lee for the retrieve. Bo - got him to run around - great way of going - nice point w/a pretty good retrieve on killed bird. - good session Dusty - did our thing and the last 2, I walked him and had Alex through the bird and I had the spike collar on him and had him stf- he did real good. Zooka - worked this girl around - got a good point, flush and wounded the bird but she went in and did a good job of finding and retrieving. Good session -visited w/Delton - think he'd like a dog - we'll work on that. Got a quick lunch and up to Gerald's -Alex painting w/Lee handling the equipment and me on the phone. Well it pumped for awhile and then the same thing again - I went to get a new plug and we got it going and it ran puffing smoke - got the fence done and working on the chute and it really started puffing - about blew the machine. We were done again - loaded the pump in Roger's truck and he took it to get fixed - almost had it done and here we go again. Back to camp, Lee and I loaded 3 horses and took them to Bassett to get shoes back on them. Mervin did the 3 for $ 15 - just a nice guy and back to town calling camp and meeting everyone for dinner at Our Place -- good dinner and back to camp. Still kinda warm - 95 this afternoon and looks to be hot for several days. August 27, 1999 - Friday morning - clear and mildly warm this morning-- Roger says the pump is fixed - we'll get this spraying done this afternoon. Off to Donnie's to run dogs with Roger this morning. We got there and it's loaded with sand burrs so a little duck tape was in order -- lots of turkey tracks on the ride in - got Alex thinking. Roading: Dolly - Mojo-Lina-Cali -- 39 min. Clancy N-Rita-Glory-Kelsey-48 min Hills: Patti & Clancey W- got these 2 going front w/Clancey a little lateral move early and Roger saw a flock of turkey leave the area but the dog wasn't involved. Both dogs swinging nicely w/Patti more forward - pace was reasonable considering the heat - felt close to 90 already - 1/2 both dogs w/good speed and hunt but Patti the bigger frontrunner - went to water and gave them a long time in the tank - sent on they both got cracking again & Clancey got lost for time but found by Alex with both finishing at a good click in very adverse weather. 33 min. - no birds but a godzillion sand burs - these two were loaded. Back at the trailer, we called it a day - too hot for dogs - all we'd be doing is taking the chance of hurting one and it wasn't worth that. Might as well get the painting done so we left Donnie's went and checked his fence out and back to town. Dropped Roger off and got ready to paint - a quick lunch and we were off - w/Lee going to the dump - Alex and I started the painting - only had 6 gallons of red left so that wouldn't be too bad-- 95 degrees by now - well the pump worked just fine, Lee never made it back - and Roger found more paint - 25 gallons more so we got all of Geralds fence, chutes, pipe - painted -looked good but we were cooked. Alex and I said enough is enough and the heck with Donnie's - it would have to be another day. Back to camp, a shower and couple of tall cool ones and some good music-Linda went to town shopping s- still too hot to feed so we waited till almost 5 and than fed - no bird work tonight - just not good weather. Bonnie & Dennis due in tonight - late so we just sat around, rested - more good music , a little wine and some fine Lou Malnaltti's Deep Dish Chicago Pizza cooked on the grill - a real treat here in the sandhills. Dogs had a real full week with the entire team getting plenty of work - birds about right - young dogs are still a little slow coming along - but we're patient or at least we say we are - whatever. August 28, 1999 - Saturday morning - a little on warm side again - Bonnie and Dennis got in about midnight or so - found their spot and all went well with their trip. Alex to Omaha today to pick up Karen so he's off the hills. The crew was ready to hit the hills - looks to be a warm humid day so we got to get going early. Devin here this morning so we hit triple gates. Roading: Clint-Lina-Mac-Flash II - 48 min. - Jill on the list but came into season this morning. Hills: Roxie & Brea - Brea quick as can be for a dog with a rebuilt hip- that had to be taken out - just amazing - off and quick these 2 hunted around well with Brea having some big moves and tentative points but nothing produced except maybe a turtle or 2 - Roxie in the area of a chicken but not really acknowledging it - Lee said she had it earlier and knocked it but she went on and I let it slide - lots of cactus and burrs - but got them into water and it got better - decent hunt at the end but nothing tremendous. 3 chickens - 33 min. On a side note, Roxie made the same move to leave me - and I road up on one hill and she was a good ways off - I let her know I wanted her and she turned and came all the way back to me - remembering her lesson from the other day - at least we made an impression. Lighnting & Bo - I've been bragging about how good she's been running and she just couldn't get it going - at one point in the area working a hot spot as 16 chickens lifted behind her without her ever knowing - just didn't smell them at all - really bad cactus and we got off and Bonnie and I cleaned her out. About this time Bo is making some nice moves and got on the wrong side of a big covey finally seeing some and chasing. Then Lightning cleaned out started to roll and really got the job to the front w/very nice moves - a single got up by Bo and he chased as the riders road up the rest of the covey -- then Lightning made game almost pointing and then working as a single got out and I yelled whoa - which she did but not before taking steps as more birds got out - not perfect by any means but that 's what we got. Bo was pretty handy the last half. 34 min. Pal & Sunny - sunny didn't come to play the game today - the hills just too much for her right now - cactus, sand burs and big country just didn't seem too inviting for her today - Pal was very wide and reaching - appeared to handle for Dennis. No birds and getting a bit warm - saw another dog off in the hay meadow so since Sunny was off w/Bonnie and Dennis - we just went to check it out and Linda came out on the atv to tell us Dalva was loose - she came to us. 33 min. - no birds. A little cloud cover is keeping the temperature down but it is humid. Flats: JJ & Hud - jj started out attacking the bird pen and finished the same with some hunt in between. Hud didn't find anything - was rather short with one good move - still got the low nose and tail. Bell & Shane- Shane just popped around the country for a dog never running did a good job. - the pup was real fast, got the idea about being in front of the horse and got into a bunch of quail - had fun so did Shane. Birdwork: Sidell's grove Dolly - Dennis planted 1 and no wind moving - she actually pointed the situation and was a little soft when I went up to her - ended up with good manners - put out another one and didn't say a word and she ended up getting too close - almost left but handled a- little shakey on the flush but manners ok. Glory - worked in on a single - styled her up but got to moving and walked in on the bird as it flushed - put her back and corrected. Delva - worked in - she kinda left us a little but got her back and got a so so point - flush, kill and retrieve - good for her. Bell - she went around and got one we had out and chased it with gusto. Brea - worked on some pigeons and she pointed real nicely - but gave Dennis fits with stepping - worked on several and got her to stand. Dusty - did out obedience thing with 6 birds and the last two wer STF - well handled - good progress here. 2:00 in the afternoon and while standing at the truck Bonnie and Dennis let the word out -- they got married 8/25/99 - Congratulations and a party is in order - they make a great couple. Alex off getting Karen - wil be back for a venison steak dinner - and some champagne to celebrate. WEEK FOUR - MAIL OUT TO LIST: ALSO NOW AVAILABLE ON THE WEBB AT PHIL'S HOME PAGE FOR BIRD DOGS. August 29,1999 - Sunday morning - Happy Birthday to Linda - she's off the roading program this morning to celebrate - oh-oh , we got rain. Lee's been loading up since 3:45 and got his gear loaded and out the door - wants to get home at a reasonable time - He's got a full day and about the time he pulls out - here comes the rain - drizzle for an hour or so and then wham - a real good downpour. Everyone just sleeps in to 7:00 or so and the we start to get it together. We give Ron Talmage a call, he's due in this morning and tell him the road might not be fit for a rental car so we plan on meeting him for the ride in - good thing to, the road was like a grease pit - good thing Lee & Denise got out when they did. We got the team rolling and went to the hills. Hills: Rita & Jill - nice cool morning for these two - cut them loose and both worked the front wide and reaching forward - pretty race w/ Jill the faster but Rita still getting the job done - Point for Rita at 11 and a very well located covey of chickens properly handled w/good style and manners - onward we went w/Jill getting into trouble up on a hill on a covey - just geezeled the covey - Karen & Alex corrected - she's back and running and the race went on - good solid forward hunting for Rita - a couple of turtles scooped up along the way, she drops and onward, Jill w/a solid point and a long ride for a turtle find. Rita v/wide and Bonnie had to collect her up to get around pond and she comes - reaches front and Karen calls point for her as Jill comes into the area and knocks the covey w/Rita standing -very good style. One bird appears crippled and they put Jill on a cord and try and work her but never get it pointed - Rita to the truck and she leaves the area going on - not ready to quit - 46 min - 40-50 chickens - an extra 10 for Rita - determined to go the hour. She'll be tough to beat today. Cali & Dolly - rock and roll time - tried to take it easy but 2 moves Dolly was leaving the country - 2 hills away and flying - Dennis tried to turn and he saw her chasing a dove - hit her w/the collar and she ran through it - need a bigger plug - Cali plenty big and flying - taken into general area where birds left, she crossed the hill and pointed v/nicely - great manners and style for flush and shot - sent on, she was really doing a good job covering the hills and going front. In the meantime, Dennis and I had the task of catching up w/Dolly and having a discussion w/her - got control of the situation and had her under our thumb, hunting the rest of the way around - not real pretty but she got the picture. The report on Cali was another classy find and a well handled STF - that Bonnie whistled her in on the birds and a very good race - she was DOD -- moved Rita to runner up - good job - she's definitely putting it together. Flats: Glory & Kelsey - worked these 2 together w/Kelsey looking v/good on the flats, only a NP but a solid race - hitting the objectives and no puttering - getting somewhere. Glory showed good range but still prone to hunt the open fields and not objective orientated - tried to get her to back Kelsey but had to work her under control on the situation. Clancey & Riley - Clancey v/aware of the bitches in season in camp and lots of marking - finally got him going and he reached fairly well-Riley handled well and did a good job of hunting the objectives and going front. Got around to the last line and Clancey did his annual split the season( wonder where Roxie gets this) he bolted and just blinked us w/Bonnie riding long and hard to collect him, we had a little talk. Sunny & Bill - Sunny, big improvement over yesterday w/good hunt and range - flash pointed and took a single for a ride - Bill being worked on NP's ended up w/a good piece after Dennis moved him on some - needs some more work. Birdwork: Brea & Bell- Dennis and Bonnie worked them in the horse pen and had a big covey of chukker find w/Brea and also a covey of quail. New spot for birdwork. Riley - worked in the pen but no birds. Mac - worked in the pen and had a very well done find on covey of chukkers. Bonnie and Dennis packed up and headed home planning on resuming the honeymoom next weekend at camp. Starting to dry out now - we went and got Ron's car moving and he worked on getting his new tack ready to use - Alex got the pigeon door done and we got chukker pepperkash going for dinner. Birdwork: Dusty - time to kick it up a notch - worked 2 by laying them down and flushing them - v/good - put a bird to sleep and let him point for the very 1st time - pointed hard w/level tail - styled up w/ Alex flushing - manners v/good - did a 2nd one and he got the idea of what we've been doing - no jump, leaps or nervousness - went to lead him off and 3 pigeons walking on the ground - he stopped and we flushed - perfect - nice job. FlashII - worked her around and got v/stylish point - killed bird and she stood for the shot and I brought the bird back to her - nice job - tons of class. JJ - dragging a cord - she worked around - bird had walked out and she got into the tall grass - and caught - ran around - we got her and checkcorded her in - got a point and flushed and took her on. Star - she ran , dragging the cord- v/nice point - steadied up - flush, kill and she got retrieve bringing it back to truck. Good job. Back to camp and a great, cool evening and a great birthday dinner for Linda's B-day -good day w/Ron enjoying his horses and being back in camp. August 30, 1999 - Monday morning- lower 60's and humid, cloudy and quite breezy - and camp a little smaller than last week w/Lee and Denise gone and a bunch less horses and dogs. Last full week of camp w/plenty to do.
