AINSWORTH - 99 August 16, 1999 - Monday - well I planned to be back at it hard but my foot just isn't allowing it right now -trying to get it good enough so I can ride when I get some help in the hills. Right now Linda's carrying most of the load and she's a very busy girl. Roading: Patti-Clancy N. - Rita - Glory - Clint-- 53 min. Kelsey - Mojo-Jill-Roxie--42 min. Cali-Bill-Pal--45 min Birdwork: Star - took her out by the pond and just hunted around - very loopy in her pattern - need to get her front better. Pointed quail caller and birds there don't look healthy. Dolly - worked in front field on 2 quail - banged them both and stood tall - need to kick it up a notch with her. Clint - ran over the sty quail and chased - corrected then he handled the 2nd just fine. Need a little polish here. Spent the rest of the day on work stuff. It got very warm in the afternoon and so I decided to just catch. The quail pen is doing a pretty good job of calling back the birds that got out. Should have the majority back in a few days. A nice peaceful day for me , not so peaceful for Linda - she's been tough. August 17, 1999 - Tuesday - beautiful cool morning, Linda gone early doing the roading. Roading: Clancey W. - Glory -Kelsey - Lightning-Clint--55 min. Lina-Mac-FlashII-Roxie--51 min. Flats: Foot still sore - used the atv and ran the flats. Dalva & Hud - ran these two with Dalva doing a better job but still rather handy- turning off her casts - got them into the new covey and they pointed and chased singles with Dalva more intense but Hud doing fine although he has a very dead stick. Stopped and watered them both and sent on , they finished going with and Dalva staying in front but rather short right now. Bo & Zooka - Zooka a level tail but learning the game w/Bo stretching and getting right down to business. Worked them on different covey w/Bo chasing some birds and Zooka a flash point and slight chase. Ran around to west w/Bo doing a good puppy job and Zooka learning. Rest of the day just doing chores - plenty to do for just the 2 of us. Got a thunderstorm in the evening - some thunder and lightning and a light shower - Roger called and wonder how we were holding up - he got 1.5 inches but be just had a light rain. August 18, 1999 - Wednesday - clear and nice and cool and foot a little better - going to stay on the atv till Lee gets here and can help w/the dogs. Flats: Dolly - cast her off and she was excited to be free - kind of free flowing to the front but not patterning on the objectives - worked to the sty covey and pointed stylishly from 20 yds - went in and flushed a single( softened a little as I went ahead - probably barely had scent) v/good manners. Sent on & headed to back covey- wrong side of wind - little scent and legit STF - she stayed( looked back at me coming ) as I went in front and flushed another - good manners - onward to the S - hit the big meadow and sang to her just a bit - about lost her - 2 little knobs - up and over to the 2nd and she's 1/2 mile away and going strong - sure glad I had the atv now - got to triple gates and had her going west- called her and she thought she was free - I reminded her on low and she came right into a pond w/30 pelicans and 10 geese - she went for them and I reminded her on high - just a quickie - she came with and that shortened her up some but we continued back to the E and hit the road and just hunted back to camp. 29 min. 2 good finds and we've raised the anti!! Mac - same game plan but more concerned about her style - cut her loose and she immediately patterned and went front taking the edge cutting across and hitting quail avenue - pointed hard as I arrived birds started leaving and she stood w/10:30 style - not her 12:00 but good - good for shot - stacked her up to cast off and had a whoa session but I won - sent to back and we made the move hit the line and she hit hard again - almost 11:00 this time - good for flush on sick single but week on the whoa for cast off - onward we angled off to this hills and hunted the low hills w/ever in- creasing range and style - almost left me but handled - good for- ward pattern swung toward the gate and the hay pen and had a very mannerly STF on a single grouse- hit the meadow and she was rather handy the rest of the way in showing some fatigue at 23 finished at 31. Good session for her - confidence coming. Road: Patti-Clancy N - Rita - Lightning- Kelsey--60 min. Flats: Glory - took her out on the atv run and started w/stf and some steps right by sty caller - warming up already and no more bird contacts although she lacked the ability to hit cover - chased a couple of dinks and I popped her than just worked on letting her flow - made some moves and took her all around the meadow than hit the n field we come to camp on. Stayed front well w/decent speed and stamina - 29 min. Chores kinda of filled up the rest of the day & we tried to get my foot going in the right direction. Lee called, he's on the road but a late start and didn't get to Sioux City to after 9:00 could me middle of the night. About 35 birds have come back to the recall pen so that's a big help. August 19, 1999 -Thursday- the coyote's kept the dogs up and the dogs in turn kept us up most of the night - worst barking since camp started. Lee never did make it in and talked to him about 8:00, they stopped in O'Neil and caught some shut eye. Needed to get the 4 wheel drive looked at - met Lee in town and they took it apart. Robin broke it on me - never had a single problem till she mentioned it and now my right front is out - went ahead and had them put locking hubs on it, there goes $ 500 real quick. Still a beautiful day out - blue skys - 55 degrees this morning. Went to get truck at noon and had Pizza hut for lunch - little short on dog work but we'll be getting there soon. Roading: Clancey W - Jill - Mojo - Lina-- 49 min. Cali - Bill - Pal - Flash II -- 48 min. Flats: Sunny & Zooka - both chased a pigeon to start then bumped and then petered out - never got with the program, just ran into each other w/sunny showing the effects of season. JJ & Hud & Buck - good point of chukkar for JJ( flew bird to start) both bumped and chased all over and eventually caught by jj carried entire brace. Hud showing some hunt & Buck pointed a quail - knocked by Hud but never scented - all ran around but Buck the only one hunting. 22 min. Birdwork: Dusty - used spike collar - he knows heel on that - took to bird bag and than did a very good job on multiple flushes without a major fight. Lightning - np where we planted one and it walked off - took another plant and had a mannerly find w/decent style. Glory- one well mannered find( lack big style) but no collar or checkcord and perfect manners. Good job. Flash II - showed a little more desire to pattern front and had a very good find - nice job. Style & intensity just the way you want. Roxie - talked to Lee Jr. and put a collar on her waist to see if she remembered his program - barely walked w/me - had manners and no class but did it. Worked loose & had STF on quail wanted to move but ok - than took her to planted single w/collar off on the last two and she handled standing fine but knowing the program. She's trying to tell me something & I need to get to next step. August 20. 1999 - Friday - a windy night and very windy morning - just kept blowing up to 30 mph early - not going to be our kind of day. Pappy is in town w/Lee and he's become head pooper scooper - in charge and the man can do the job. Him and Lee need to go to Norfolk to p.u. Denise whose due in this afternoon. We're a little slow going this morning but we'll get something done although it has to change to the flats due to the biig wind. Roading: Dolly - Clancy N. - Rita - Kelsey -- 66 min. Lina - Mac- Cali - Bill- Pal - - 39 min. these guys are ok except Bill is really hurting - just probably a little too much too quick - back off him and Pal a little. Flats: Lightning & Roxie - interesting brace - ran these two for 20 min & Lightning just did a real nice job - no birds, no collar - just hunted front and good speed and style while Roxie showed some of her best application to the cover but no birds in the big wind. Clint & Bo- Clint huge early and settled down to gd - rather handy after a while and Bo left for camp when he could see it - to that point an ok puppy w/some good moves. Clint a marginal STF on single and the heat got to him at the end - just so so the last 5 with a 25 min course. Jill & Dalva - Jill the better of the two but not plugged in and chased dickie birds to start - rather a v/average day for Jill - Dalva still bouncing off cover- plenty of room to improve - Jill got 2nd wind and got better but still not up to her standard run. Birdwork: Dusty: worked on 4 pigeons w/half hitch and shot fired - bird in the hand 1st 2 then on the ground - v/good progress. Patty: single w/good style and v/good manners - 2nd not as good couldn't really say she had it but manners ok. Dolly - nice style - couldn't produce single - moved her into an almost flush - corrected tenderly - - next one w/good style - no collar on the dog - still good progress. Went and had a great dinner w/Lee & Denise fixing fajita's and guac by Linda - just a great meal. Late night tonight - dogs all done - wind still blowing . Big morning planned - Sat. new week - Alex and Alexandra due in tomorrow. WE're ready -off to Valentine tomorrow afternoon for Rodeo and dinner. Can't wait!!!!!! Auguest 21, 1999 - Saturday - clear and sunny blue skies to start the day - trying to get an early start. Flats: Glory - ran her off the atv & tried to get her on some quail best I could get was a STF and her pattern was much more open country orientated as you could expect from a greenbroke. Clancey W - let him roll and he did - good on the edges and stayed front - went S into the big meadow and hit a couple of edges - then to the hills and he left me - just couldn't stay up with him- he got cookin' and I saw a chicken in the air & him in the area - couldn't prove it but I didn't tell him that and put the hook on him and roaded him in. Roading: Lightning - Clint - Jill -- 62 min. Mojo - Lina -- 34 min Hills: On the ride down S, we counted 3 nice covies of chickens plus 3 or 4 singles. Mac & Roxie - ran these two way S and they had a nice race w/good range and forward movement - Roxie her best course except for her happy bark. A NP for Roxie @ 5 w/better style than I've ever seen out of her about 11:00 w/Mac a command back that needed help. Went on and both had some big moves - staying front -Roxie at 28 worked into the wind , scenting and than stopped w/level tail as a chicken left and she stood as 3 more chickens got up - Mac came into the area but never saw birds and we stopped her. Praised Roxie big time - made her dog of the day. Flash II & Sunny - Flash showed a big improvement on the left hand loop although it returned some toward the end. Sunny started out Fairly good but got into a turtle and as Devin/Doc encouraged her to leave it, either the turtle bit her or doc stepped on her and she was a little tender footed the rest of the time - saw a few birds leave but nothing for the dogs. 35 min. Patti & Star - Star didn't live up to her name - she barely moved around and we headed back to camp. Patti started out and rolled around the course - big moves - got a little handy but opened up at the wind mill and then did a little frog hunt - finished so so in the big heat. 40 min. Warmed right up - did chores and rebuild the quail covies - - moved the new one a little deeper in the woods. - hawks winning the war. Got cleaned up - Alex & Alexandra due in camp tonight - we went to Valen- tine - picked up Roger and going to meet the rest of the family for dinner at Peppermill. Youngs is more clothes than tack anymore - had a good dinner - Painter's headed home and we went to the rodeo - a quiet crowd but really a pretty good rodeo. Great wild horse ride. Back in camp, no Alex or Alexandra yet - hit the hay and they arrived after we went to bed. August 22, 1999 - Sunday WEEK # 3 - WRITE UP SENT We'll, we took it easy getting up this morning - stayed in the sack to around 7:00 and than got to see Alex, turns out he got in around midnight - good trip , just a long day. We gave Linda the day off roading and decided to run from camp - took a brace out through the flats then the big meadow in the south and ended at triple gates, Linda met us and we took another brace back. We had Alexandra with us and we were off!! - sidenote is that I just refilled our quail yesterday and we'll see how they handle it. Flats: Dolly & Dalva - very interesting brace w/Delva showing a little more hunt but not willing to attack the cover. Dolly just floating to the front and I believe pointing her past finds although I did see a bird fly that Delva chased - Dolly I let release herself and she hunted the open field and pointed w/extreme style - let Delva come through and Dolly dove at the bird which flushed, I yelled and hit her with the collar( I thought) and she stopped and was corrected. Sent on , she rolled and didn't want to go with me - tried getting to Sidell's place out west & I popped her again and Alex questioned if I had the button in - checked it out and didn't have it in- rode hard and fast to get to her and called her in which she did - plugged her in and we were off again. Hunted through the gate and went south and Dolly just stretched, went to go back on me once, a pop ( it worked this time ) & I had her attention - she just handled perfect w/very good drive and carriage - pretty to watch. Dalva was a little overdone toward the end - had some tweety bird chase and a quail chase but not really full into it. 32 min. no wild birds. Kelsey & Bo - Lee said he tried to sell Geddeis Bo last fall, he should've done it - just a nice way of going, very birdy and carries himself great, chased some dicky birds - all and all a good job -- Kelsey was fast and wide early making some real good moves and at about 7 winded birds, pointed - moved up and out went 3 sharp- tails, she stood but new she crowded them, I put her back and told her so. After that she still had good moves but several stops to dinks and almost false points, not trusting herself but still show- ing forward movement and good speed. Hunted the flats and lost her in real tall grass and found standing, very well located covey w/ perfect manners and good style - sent on, she had a little more pop in her step and finished hunting strongly. 28 min. - 3 chickens JJ & Mac - JJ has the carriage, some good moves, a little hunt and chase of dinks & other trash, partial chase on a sharptail(just spotted in air) but nothing to write home about. Mac a nice solid pattern, tail up as she hunted the objectives a little flat going from place to place. Very good point at 1st feeder w/JJ knocking a quail and her having v/stylish find w/good manners. She showed nice bottom and still going with us and hunting all the way to the end. 32 min. - 1 chicken Glory & Flash II - Glory showed me some real leg today, just rolling around the flats, very wide and mainly front -got after her for a NP that she left on after I whoa'd her- she wasn't too happy about that but she listened then. Flash a better pattern w/ less loops than in the past and a pretty good pattern. She hunted and listened fairly well, with some help from Alex. Glory had a very poor STbump at 2nd caller and tried to leave, I corrected and put her in the harness. Not banner bird work for Glory, Flash had sight of one and appeared to handle it ok w/style. Finish at a moderate pace. Kind of a lazy Sunday afternoon, just took it pretty easy the whole day. Lee took some pups for work in the horse pen where all the chukker hung out. Flats: all the pups ran w/Buck. Hud worked around still w/low tail - had covey of chukkar and chased w/vigor. Zooka - ran around but has plenty still to learn -no birds. Star - just seems like a lost soul - need to spend more time w/her. Birdwork: Dusty - the key her is patience and we're just throwing pigeons, he's standing as we lay the bird down and then kick it out and fire a shot. Actually had Devin walk behind him before we flushed the bird. He's taking to this very well. August 23, 1999 - Monday - clear, cool and promise of cooler weather for a day or two. We're hard at it.
